Great Britain has voted to leave the European Union (EU). It would be the first country to leave the EU, which began after World War II. There are 27 other nations in the EU.
After the vote, British Prime Minister David Cameron said he would resign, or quit, as leader of Britain. He had wanted people to vote to stay in the EU. "I will do everything I can as prime minister to steady the ship over the coming weeks and months," he said. "But I do not think it would be right for me to try to be the captain that steers the country to its next destination."
Stock markets around the world fell after hearing the news.
