According to an old German legend, if a groundhog sees its shadow on February 2, winter will last another six weeks.
On Tuesday, several famous American groundhogs did not see their shadows, predicting an early spring. They included Punxsutawney Phil in Pennsylvania, Staten Island Chuck in New York, General Beauregard Lee in Georgia, and Jimmy the Groundhog in Wisconsin.
Woody the Woodchuck of Michigan disagreed with his fellow rodents. He saw his shadow and predicted six more weeks of winter.
Groundhogs are large members of the squirrel family. They are also called woodchucks.
