Challenger uses phonics, controlled vocabulary, and sequential skill development while building reading, comprehension, and writing skills. In books 5–8 the emphasis switches from learning to read to reading to learn, expanded higher-level readings, and high-level vocabulary.
Book 5: Fictional passages are drawn from classic literature and include short stories, myths, and fables.
Book 6: Students are introduced to longer nonfiction passages as their reading levels rise. Topics include family, jobs, and going places.
Book 7: Phonics charts continue to be introduced and students read classic literature passages to help prepare for pre-HSE level work.
Book 8: Students read fictional passages similar to what they might encounter on HSE tests. Topics include space exploration, rainforests, and famous explorers.
