Adult learners will build their reading, writing, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension skills while reading content important to today's students as they begin their own journey to success.
The introductory level introduces students to the alphabet, phonics, and word work.
Levels 1 and 2 contain four themed units with easy-to-follow lessons that feature phonics and word work as well as a variety of contextualized nonfiction and fiction reading passages. Units include topics such as Everyday Life, The World Around You, Taking a Stand, and Problem Solving.
Levels 3–6 are built around the essential components of reading and help prepare students for pre-HSE level work. Each book follows four themed units: Work and Life Skills, Social Studies, Science, and Literature.

I was very pleased with the content of these texts (Journey to Success). As an instructor of advanced ESL students preparing for college level work (and preparing also to take the TABE test as their marker for progress), I used the levels 4-6 books, though I have received and viewed all levels. This series provides a nice selection of types of reading materials, targeted and practical skill-building exercises, inviting conversation prompts that allow for practice of new vocabulary, and interesting writing prompts.
As for the series, I believe the leveled books scaffold well and assist in skill and vocabulary development. The readings are appropriate, practical, varied, informative, and interesting. I appreciate that each text contains readings related to important life skills, like building credit, handling credit cards, bank accounts, etc. as well as readings about history, such as civil rights, and the Constitution, followed by science readings and then selections from literature.
Each book and level book is organized in a logical and consistent manner, from content to skill building exercises. I especially appreciate the way that vocabulary learning techniques are presented in the text, and how, again, the exercises scaffold one another and invite the students not only to use the word, understand its parts, but also invite the students to use the word in the conversational writing prompts provided within. Both the readings and the exercises were the right length and in the right amount so as to provide enough interest and practice without seeming tedious or boring.
The writing and thinking and discussion prompts were also varied, interesting, and inviting. The aids for writing, such as diagrams, included were helpful in assisting with organization, etc. It might be helpful to include some successful examples of the type of writing requested.
The mini-lessons on grammar were well-targeted and would be very useful for a GED class or a class for advanced students in which only review is necessary. In the classes I teach, some of this grammar needs to be taught a little more in-depth, but these mini-lessons provided nice review or practice once the base of the concept had already been established.
Last but not least, the price of this series is very reasonable and very doable for the student population that needs this book, when competing companies offer similar level books for at least twice the amount. The value for the price is fantastic!

The Journey to Success series has enabled my adult students to learn phonics, vocabulary, reading, and writing skills quickly. My students have advanced in two months from non-readers to a third-grade reading level. My students are adult men in a prison environment, and the materials are engaging and mature which allows them to not lose pride in the learning process.
